Creek Identification Signs

How many, and which, creeks do you pass over during your daily activities or your visit to Prescott?

Lots of people didn't even know Prescott had creeks!! So, at the prompting of several community members and Mark Stevens, former City Manager, this project was designed to help Prescott-area residents, and visitors, develop an awareness of the many creeks in Prescott. Ideally, their awareness will lead to appreciation and involvement in efforts to protect, restore and celebrate these green ribbons running through our city.

Prescott Creeks first partnered with the City of Prescott Public Works and Streets Departments to install approximately 80 signs at the intersection of Prescott's 8 creeks and Prescott's many roads. Once these signs were in place, the Prescott CreekWatch Network adopted the Creek Signing Project as their very own! Since then, they have made significant advances with the project, by successfully funding two grant proposals and installing many more signs.

The Network initiated the second phase of the project with a grant from the Yavapai County Community Foundation Fund for the Environment. This phase continued the first effort by installing signs at the intersection of the creeks and Yavapai County Roads around the Prescott area. Each sign features the creek name, Prescott Creeks logo and the logo of our major partner in the project (the City of Prescott & Yavapai County governments so far).

A third phase, also funded by the Yavapai County Community Foundation Fund for the Environment, was completed in October of 2002! In phase III of the project we developed six interpretive "Watershed Signs" which were placed in and around downtown Prescott. The signs feature a map of the Upper Granite Creek Watershed, informative text about the creeks and each sign's location, as well as information about the project sponsors. For instance, the City of Prescott GIS department helped with creation of the base map for the signs. The City Trails Specialist was also a huge help when it came to installing the six signs. Thank you!

Future phases of the project include working with the Arizona Department of Transportation to secure signing of Hwy. 89 crossings with Granite and Willow Creeks, and working with the many homeowner's associations that maintain their own roads which cross several of Prescott's creeks.
