(Excerpt from Watson Woods Comprehensive Plan 1996)
Environmental Education Plan Goals
The Watson Woods Environmental Education Program will use riparian
ecology to teach basic ecological principles and environmental awareness.
The Program will provide opportunities for learners to develop skills in
environmental management and restoration ecology. Environmental education
materials will be created and/or located that will provide information on local,
regional, and global riparian issues.
Educational Philosophy
Environmental Education at the Watson Woods Riparian Preserve will help
citizens to develop an awareness and sensitivity to our complex environment.
When teaching environmental education, all aspects of the environment must
be considered – the natural and the man-made, along with cultural and
economic phenomenon. The activities of an environmental education program
should display the interconnectedness and interdependence of all living and
non-living things.
How the Education Plan Relates to the Rest of the Comprehensive Plan
The environmental education element of the Comprehensive Plan will be
developed to integrate education through the activities of the Preserve
Management, Restoration, and Inventory and Monitoring Programs.
Educational materials will be created to coincide with field activities such as
monitoring groundwater quantity/quality, planting trees, stabilizing slopes,
designing and constructing trails and researching/creating interpretive
materials.
The baseline data to be gathered and interpreted by initial Preserve inventories will be the foundation of the of the Environmental Education Program. The following objectives and strategies provide for the creation of an Environmental Education Curriculum and Activity Guide, an Interpretive
Program and a Community Outreach Program. The Curriculum and Activity
Guide will serve as a reference for creating classroom (both indoor and
outdoor) programs. The Interpretive Program will serve as the beginning of the Preserve’s efforts to design and create a wide variety of interpretive materials and programs. The Community Outreach Program will be designed to connect the Preserve to the Prescott community, specifically local schools, colleges and other interested parties.
